Root (ルート, Rūto) is an elder wizard and servant of the King of Enlad in Tales from Earthsea. One of the king's wizards, Root is older and wiser than most of the king's other advisers. The king goes to him with questions about magic. It is Root who explains the nature of the kingdom's latest problems, although he doesn't know why it has become that way. He seems to be knowledgeable on the subject of dragons.
Story[]
He is present for the first time at the meeting, where the epidemic and the bad harvest in Enlad are reported. Among those present, he is the oldest man. He is sure that the disturbance of the balance is responsible for the anomalies, which explains the fight among the dragons from Earthsea.
The king of Enlad seems to have great confidence in him. Finally, he commissions him to look into the matter and lead the investigation. After the meeting, he tells about the past time when humans and dragons lived together peacefully. Then he moves on in his narrative to why the dragons are fighting each other.
