Royal Palace

Royal Palace is the King's royal home in the capitcal city of Kingsbury as featured in the film, Howl's Moving Castle.

Background[]

The old palace gate leads to a large plaza, where officers and society women enjoy rides on the flying kayak. The war has seemingly not affected the capital city of Kingsbury. Several magic talismans placed by the royal sorceress Suliman line the entrance and the colossal staircase leading to the palace, forbidding anything magical to enter.^[1] Inside the palace are winding rooms, one specially outfitted with powerful lamps meant to entrap the Witch of the Waste.

One of the rooms leads to a vast greenhouse filled with tropical plants.

History[]

Howl suddenly hits upon the idea of having Sophie visit the royal palace. He wants her to pose as the mother of the wizard Pendragon (one of the names he occasionally assumes). He's hoping she'll be able to get him out of the war by saying her son is "no good". He lends her a charm ring and assures her, "Don't worry, I'll transform myself and accompany you." The skeptical Sophie reples, "Now I really have a bad feeling about this," but proceeds to walk through the city of Kingsbury to the palace.^[2]

Sophie climbs the colossal stairway with Heen in her arms. She passes the Witch of the Waste who is exhausted by the time she reaches the palace. Sophie and the Witch of the Waste are led to a room with only one chair. Sophie runs after Heen and exits when the witch, left alone, falls into Suliman's trap. Sophie is led by a servant named Kosho to the greenhouse where she is confronted by the royal sorceress Suliman, who assumes she is the mother of Howl. As she defends Howl, Sophie turns into a young woman. Suliman discerns Sophie's true appearance and feelings for Howl.
