Marco's Savoia S.21 is the fictional prototype seaplane used by Porco Rosso.

Technical Characteristics[]

The Savoia S.21 is armed with two forward-firing machineguns. The aircraft's fuselage is round and has a high wing with an engine on top of it. The wing is slightly swept back (made more swept due to Fio's overhaul) and is placed unusually forward.

Background[]

Porco's Savoia S.21 was an experimental aircraft appropriated by Porco after the First World War. He decided to overhaul the plane and painted it crimson red. This original design is based on the Savoia S.21.

Trivia[]

  • Supposedly the Savoia S.21 was modelled after SIAI S.21, an Italian racing flying boat built by SIAI for the 1921 Schneider Trophy race. However, it does not closely resemble the real S.21[1], which was a biplane and used a pusher configuration with the pilot seated in front of the prop. The S.21 shares more in common designwise with the Macchi M.33, which competed in the 1925 Schneider race (which it lost to the Curtiss R3C).
