Yubaba: It's order to you. Right?

Yu-Bird is one of Yubaba's servants and spies[1] in the movie Spirited Away.

When she was transformed into a small creature by Zeniba, she was referred as Haedori (ハエドリ, lit. "fly bird").

It has long wings and two bird claws, with a facsimile of Yubaba's head and face. Its feathers are a dark blue/grey colour, and the fur round it's neck is black.

Plot[]

She made her first appearance when she was seen flying above the Bathhouse soon after the very first nightfall in the movie. She appears to show some of the characteristics of Yubaba; their faces are similar in shape and features.

Later in the film, Yu-Bird transforms into a very small, crow-like creature, resembling a fly, after Zeniba made her first appearance to Chihiro, Boh, and Haku. Boh takes a liking to Yu-Bird after their transformation; they can both be seen throughout the later parts of the film riding on Chihiro's shoulder and playing together. It is not made apparent in the movie if they had a positive relationship prior to being transformed or not.

Trivia[]

  • Yu-Bird is never officially named in the English version of the film. It was only referred to once as "that bird" by Haku.
  • Miyazaki revealed in interviews that the reason why Yu-Bird didn't turn back to her original form is because she is happy that she gained her own unique appearance which isn't a mimic of anyone.
